Intelligent Transportation Systems

Dunn Engineering Associates, P.C. (DEA) has long been at the forefront of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) development and deployment.  Representing its national leadership in ITS, DEA was selected by FHWA to author the Freeway Incident Management Handbook, Communications Handbook for Traffic Control Systems and Traffic Control Systems Handbook.  These fundamental handbooks reflect the outstanding reputation  that DEA enjoys for its ITS expertise.

DEA has extensive experience in ITS feasibility studies, preliminary and final design, PS&E installation, technical and operational support of ITS.  In New York, DEA was responsible for the Long Island ITS master plan and the final design of the Southern State Parkway ITS.  DEA’s experience also includes ITS projects in Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey and the District of Columbia.

DEA has performed architecture studies, preliminary and final designs for Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) on Long Island, I-287 (Westchester County), I-476 (Philadelphia area), Pennsylvania Rt. 309 (Philadelphia area), I-95 (Connecticut), the Boston Central Artery and Tunnel, the Providence, R.I.area and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey bridges and tunnels. Currently, DEA has been working on the largest active ITS design in the nation for the District of Columbia DOT (DDOT). This is a significant system upgrade for signal and freeway systems which includes aspects of homeland security for ITS equipment.  These projects included selection of traffic monitoring techniques, traffic control techniques such as ramp metering, variable message signs (VMS), highway advisory radio (HAR) and off-highway motorist information tie-ins including highway advisory telephone, visual remote traffic displays, tie-ins to media and independent service providers.  Technology studies and selections included detection technology, communications technology, VMS, HAR, RWIS, WIM and field processor technologies.
