INFORM (INformation FOR Motorists) is a corridor
traffic management system designed to obtain better utilization
of existing highway facilities. INFORM has been implemented in a
50-mile long highway corridor on Long Island, New York in
accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Federal
Highway Administration (FHWA), the New York State Department of
Transportation (NYSDOT), and the transportation agencies of
local governments on Long Island.
INFORM corridor contains three major limited access roadways, the Long Island
Expressway (LIE-Interstate 495), the Northern State Parkway /
Grand Central Parkway (NSP/GCP), and the Southern State Parkway,
along with a number of
parallel and crossing arterial streets and freeways, a total of
128 miles of controlled roadways. The system consists of
electronic surveillance, communications, signing and control
components, traveler information for warning and route
diversion, ramp control and signal control.
DEA personnel played instrumental roles in
conceiving, designing, implementing and now operating INFORM.
DEA participated in the overall evaluation of INFORM, lessons
learned, and establishment of guidelines to be used in the
design, operation and evaluation of similar systems. DEA, in
association with Parsons Brinckerhoff, now operates INFORM for
New York State.
