Course Development

  • FHWA - NHI Course, Managing Travel for Planned  Special Events

The Federal Highway Administration has awarded a contract to DEA and Iteris Corporation, to develop National Highway Institute Course No. 133099, Managing Travel for Planned Special Events.

This course will provide practitioners with a working knowledge of techniques and strategies to successfully: (1) plan for and operate a particular planned special event or (2) manage all planned special events in a region.   Practitioners will gain an understanding of the collective tasks facing multidisciplinary and inter-jurisdictional planned special event stakeholder groups charged with developing and implementing solutions to acute and system-wide impacts on travel during a special event.

Course sessions will identify potential tasks and stakeholder activities conducted within individual planned special event management phases.  The course will promote the Managing Travel for Planned Special Events handbook prepared by DEA and guide participants on how to apply its  key concepts.   The Managing Travel for Planned Special Events handbook can be accessed via the following link:

  • FHWA - National Training Course Update ID/IQ

FHWA awarded the Iteris / DEA team a 5-year Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract for the development, revision, updating and presentation nationwide of training courses. These courses are for the Intelligent Transportation Systems and Traffic Operations curriculum as well as a variety of other operations and traffic engineering courses. New course development and the updating of existing courses require the ability to incorporate sound technical content into acceptable adult learning instructional design. It is anticipated that a combination of classroom courses and a number of distance learning (most notably, web-based training) products will be developed.

  • Freeway Management and Operations Course Preparation

A team led by Iteris Corporation that includes DEA as a major subcontractor was recently awarded a contract to prepare a course on Freeway Management and Operations for the National Highway Institute. The training course will provide participants with a general appreciation and understanding of the key policies, institutional issues, challenges and barriers, technical, and other issues to consider in the planning, design, implementation, management, operation, evaluation, and marketing of freeway facilities. The project will develop a three-day course that addresses and covers the key freeway management and operations concepts, topics, and issues that practitioners should consider and apply. The course will attempt to develop a common understanding of the basic concepts, techniques, and key issues that influence freeway management and the operation of traffic throughout the life cycle of a freeway facility.

  • Federal Highway Administration - Communication Course

DEA prepared and presented to FHWA personnel a course in communications for ITS.  The course is used to train FHWA region and division engineers in communications concepts to enable them to administer the many ITS projects now under development throughout the country.
