Walter M. Dunn,
Jr., P.E. founded Dunn Engineering, P.C. (a predecessor of the
current firm) in 1982. During the initial period of the firm’s
existence, most of its activity focused on providing traffic
impact studies and roadway improvement plans to private developers
and local government agencies on Long Island. The firm developed
an excellent reputation performing this type of work. It gained
many referrals from attorneys, developers and other engineering
firms and claimed as clients some Fortune 500 companies such as
McDonald’s, United Artists and Warner Brothers.
By the end of the
eighties, the firm had grown to more than a dozen people,
including two new partners, Ronald N. Hill, P.E. and Robert A.
At the beginning of
the nineties, Dunn Engineering Associates (DEA) offered its
traffic engineering expertise to the public sector with notable
results. As a prime Consultant, DEA won major contracts with the
New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) including a
major Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) design and a major
corridor planning study. As a subconsultant, DEA also won a NYSDOT
contract to operate the INFORM Traffic Management System.
Overall, by the mid
nineties, DEA could claim that it was:
nationally known independent ITS Consultant.
One of a
few consultants with ITS operations experience.
One of the
two or three leading traffic engineering firms on Long
Island, a major player in both public and private sector
important NYSDOT consultant, particularly in Planning and
Traffic & Safety.
About this time,
staff expertise was added in the construction inspection, and
structural engineering areas.
In 1997, the
acquisition of Norton Brothers, a site planning and surveying
firm, further diversified DEA. This acquisition creates synergy
between the site planning and traffic engineering business, as
each provides referrals to the other.
Including Norton Brothers Dunn, a staff of over 100 now works under the Dunn
perceived as primarily an ITS, traffic, and transportation
specialty firm, DEA has now broadened its skill base and can
handle projects in highway design, structural engineering and
other civil engineering disciplines.
